Cleaning Methods for Different Flooring

How to Properly Clean Your Flooring Solution

Your home contains a number of high traffic areas: the kitchen, your bathroom, bedroom, living room, doorways, hallways. Whatever flooring solution you have chosen for these areas, it has most likely accumulated dirt from outside over time. To keep your home looking pristine, it is important to clean your floors often, plus the occasional deep clean. DUNCAN Flooring Specialist offers some helpful recommendations!

Carpet

Deep cleanings are especially important to maintain the appearance and warranty of your carpet. Aside from regularly vacuuming your carpet to remove visible dirt or debris, you can do some interim spot cleaning. There are a variety of different “formulas” to use based on the fiber of your carpet and the type of stain you are trying to remove. Give DUNCAN Flooring Specialist a call, and they will try to help you with some recommendations. You may also want to contact a professional carpet cleaner to do several rooms at once. Renting a carpet cleaning machine is great if you are only doing smaller areas.

Ceramic Tile

Ceramic tiles can be cleaned fairly easily. Start by sweeping and vacuuming up loose dirt. Then you can mop the surface using a solution of concentrated ceramic cleaner (available at home improvement centers) and hot water. Instead of using a sponge mop, we recommend using a chamois mop. A chamois mop is more absorbent and won’t leave excess water. MAKE SURE YOU USE CLEAN WATER throughout the entire floor. If your water is dirty, it will leave a dried residue and your clean floor will look dirty! You may need to clean your grout if it has discolored. This should be done by using a grout cleaner. Abrasive or DIY cleaners will change the Ph of the grout and cause it to discolor further. Give DUNCAN Flooring Specialist a call, and they will try to help you with some recommendations.

Hardwood

Contrary to popular opinion, DO NOT USE WATER ON YOUR HARDWOOD FLOOR! It will eventually damage the finish much sooner than regular foot traffic. To best clean your hardwood flooring, we suggest purchasing a hardwood floor cleaner (available at home improvement centers). Use a dry, microfiber mop to apply it and ensure that the area is completely dry after using it.

Laminate

DO NOT USE WATER ON YOUR LAMINATE FLOOR! Even a minimal amount, on a damp mop, may get trapped beneath the floor with no chance to dry – eventually causing damage to your floor. You can purchase laminate floor cleaner at home improvement centers. Microfiber mops are good to use on laminate flooring as they will absorb the liquid solution, unlike other mops that may leave extra liquid.

Vinyl

Before deep cleaning vinyl floors, it is important to vacuum or take a dry mop to the area to remove any dirt or dust. Afterwards, you can choose to utilize a vinyl cleaner. Again, make sure you use clean water throughout the entire floor so as to not leave dried, dirty residue. Vinyl is very easy to maintain!
